Clove, yummmPosted by txilar on April 1, 2004 at 12:22:40: In reply to: Yo, Txilar and Faery Ring! Bail me out here! posted by Catherine Carwright-Jones on March 31, 2004 at 23:55:10: I've never used clove oil in my henna mix, mainly as it is so commonan irritant I just never saw the point. Clove Bud is supposed to be fairly safe in dilutions, but I myself have also done the toothache thing. I never knew why it worked, just that it did. Same thing with nutmeg, I used that too. Sort of like that colourful Xmas candy in tins that make your tongue go numb, I thought it was that same principal. Fried nerves eh? I can tell I'll have to read up on this! This page, about halfway down, gives some good detail on clove: http://www.essentiallyoils.com/Newsletters/November_1999_Newsletter/no vember_1999_newsletter.html As far as fir type oils go, I believe there is a certain constituent in them that makes them more likely to be irritating. I do know that they develop sensitising agents with age and who knows how old something is by the time they actually buy it. Like most of those "certain constituents" some irritate a lot of people, some irritate all people and some irritate only a chosen few. I'm back home tonight so I'll see what I can look up to verify what it is about the stuff. It's funny, I use citrus oils in my personal mix and never have a problem, but Geranium, supposed to be quite safe, itches the holy mackerel out of me! As far as essential oil/Aromatheraphy safety in general, here's one of the masters: http://www.aromamedical.com/articles/eosafety.html There is so much hearsay, mythologising and faerie tale stories relating to New Age fluff that it is hard to get concrete info on essential oils and Aromatherapy. Mr Watts has an excellent program and relies on as much fact and scientific backbone as possible, choosing to eschew the empowering mystic power of the ancients gifts bestowed upon us blah blah blah. =) Monoterpenes are a trip indeed!
