I beleive one can become sensitized to eugenol in cloves and thus
experience dermatitis. The pain reducing effects are likely from the
warming properties. Like with capsaicin(sp?-you know, chili), the
nerve route is taken over by the sensation of heat, leaving no room
on it's pathway for the sensation of pain.
