Can Indigo really be used to make ash tones?

I read on some pages that indigo can be used on brown hair to
neutralize the red/orange and make an ash brown. Can this really be
done? I thought indigo will turn your hair black?

My natural color is ash brown, but the four feet of length has
turned orange/brassy over time and I want to neutralize it.
