How can I get lighter reds with my hair?

I have ash brown hair naturally and when I henna it, it comes out a
nice reddish brown color. However, I was wondering if anyone knew a
way I could lighten it safely before applying henna so I get a more
orange red? I assume that bleaching kits are too strong, but what
about something like sun-in or lemon juice? Any ideas?
