That pretty much answers it! It sounds like it's the same pectin
we're using; surprised that you need so little. I was microwaving the
pectin for the test batches, but I'll do it in a pan for the real thing.

I've done hairbrush tests for a total of six hours in order to see the
worst that could happen, and it doesn't seem to have changed the
colour at all, so I feel safer about that one. The reason I wondered
whether you'd need longer with the gel method is because you're not
just giving the herbs a more workable consistency, you're also using
them in a more dilute form than if you just mixed them up with water.
I have no idea how long I need to get the conditioning benefits from
henna: it's years since I did it, and because I wasn't doing all the
right stuff like terping I used to have to leave it on for four-six
hours in order to get the colour.

I've bought what's probably about 280g or a bit less by now of
powdered herbs, just to be on the safe side. So a litre and a half of
water plus 75 ml pectin? It doesn't seem like much, judging by how
much they tell you to use in making jam. That said, it's about a
third of the bottle, maybe it does sound like enough. If you mix it
all up and after it's cooled it doesn't seem gel-like enough, can you
just add more pectin?

Now all I need is someone to come and help! Playing with mud time ahoy!
