Thawing paste

When you have some paste or jelly left over, how do you freeze it, and
how do you thaw it? I froze it in a small bowl (which came with one of
those noodle soups) and thawed it by putting the bowl in a pot of hot
tap water. But I got about half cold paste and half still frozen paste.
