I don't know. i think it might just be the hair color. i find it
hard to see how continual growth of white hairs can be stained "red
red", since white hairs are always coming out, and can't be stained
over and over again fast enough to see if they can indeed turn a
red. in my mom's case, it always turns orange, and we didn't indigo
over her hennaed hair for a few weeks to see if the color would turn
darker. i imagine dark caucasian hair would react the same. i think
with grey hairs, it's easier to disguise, but it's the white white
hairs that turn orange. it might be a worthwhile experiment one day
though
