Its my guess that a some neolithic out herding goats saw a goat that seemed to have blood all around its mouth and probably freeked ...... and ran to see what the goat was eating and if the goat was dying. She pulled some of the henna cud out of the goat's mouth and it stained her (I'm arbitrarilly guessing it was a her) fingers red, and maybe even noticed it helped the cuticle splits. When gazelles nibble henna bushes, it stains their lips and they look like they have on lipstick. The earliest evidence I've got on people using henna to stain their hair red is from Jericho, about 6000 BCE.
