(Base housing freezers barely had enough room for food let alone to stash a handy supply of henna...LOL)I had been coloring my hair for years as well as perming one a year before that. I think I waited about two months after my last chemical color to take the henna plunge. I did do a test my hair before I took the plunge and I HIGHLY reccomend you do that too not matter what type of henna you decide to use. Use either the hair from your hairbrush or take a small chunk from the underside of your hair and slather that with a bit of the henna mix, wrap it with plasitc wrap and rubberband that in place until your ready to rinse it out. If it turns an awful color you can usually hide the results because its on the underside of your hair or cut the small chunk off without anyone being able to see where your missing a bit. I've used Avigal's mahogany, burgandy, red, and black on my hair and the red and champane on my daughter's hair. I never really saw the color difference between the mahogany, burgandy or red although some (can't remember which it was) had a very definate "spinachy" smell to it when mixed. The champane gave my daughter's dishwater blond hair an almost foxcoat red/orange which she loved. The black appears to be an indigo mix of some type. I test check every time I've used it and the dye release appears to be indigo and there is no chemical smell to it whatsoever. I don't buy thier claim any of it is pure henna, but I would believe its plant mixes not chemicals that give them their color range. None of the times I used it did I ever get a chemically smell from the mixed henna. I liked the results with the Avigal, but the fresh body art quality stuff beats it hands down. Avigal has tons of leaf and stem bits in it which is a bear to get out of long hair. I would still be getting leaf bits out when I combed or brushed my hair days after I had done it. With the body art quality it rinses out easier and I don't have the leaf bits to muss with. I also prefer the color I get from the fresh stuff. Avigal isn't bad and I do still use it occasionally if I'm out of the good stuff and really need to do my hair. A side note I ordered from that ball beauty supply place and the service was awful!! I paid for three day shipping, which it was shipped in three days, however the order took over a month to process and email inquiries about the order were never answered. Hope my long ramble here helps!
