I've done the herbal treatment

Great fun, Joanna and I spent the afternoon playing with mud. I am so
glad about some of the tips I read here, especially the ones about
lying in the bath first to wash it out and using loads of conditioner.
It wasn't worth putting sandalwood in, though; the smell lingers if
you use it in a herbal-vinegar rinse, but not with this sort of process.

The gel method wasn't an unqualified success, though. It was
definitely more manageable than I remember henna being, but it was a
little too wet (and we still had about 1/5 of the liquid left over)
and not hugely gel-like. I reckon that pectin products must vary and
that's what happened, it was a fairly weak pectin and obviously not
the one Fia was thinking of. The main problem, apart from it being a
tad tricky to handle as it was more liquid than we'd hoped, was that
it dripped down my neck while it was on and cooking. I had lots of
cling film on my head, followed by a towel turban. After considering
taping cotton wool to my neck, we ended up rooting out an old
(probably about 12 years old!) crop top I occasionally sleep in and
tucking that in. It looked very Lawrence of Arabia...gone strangely
wrong.

But overall we had a great time, Joanna is pretty much converted to
henna already, and my hair is thick and glossy and beautiful. Joanna
is naturally dark dirty blonde, or at least she thinks so. She's 19
and last saw her natural hair colour when she was 13. She dyes it
copper, which should be manageable enough with henna, and last
coloured it a few days ago, so we might have a try when the exams are
over. Henna by proxy at last!
