So from what I can understand terpenes are hydrocarbon chains. They can sometimes take a cyclic form rather than a straight chain. The alcohol end is an OH group. I think the fact that they have low molecular weights and are nonpolar liquids tend to make them volatile or evaporate (break away from one another and float away as a gas). It is probably what makes them small enough to penetrate the dead skin layer and carry across the henna dye.
