prepping hair for henna aplication

does anyone know of any pre-henna prepairation measures to take
before you goop your hair? I dampen my hair first to ensure the dye
travels to the hard to reach spots, but I was wondering if
conditioner build up, oily hair, etc. affects how the hair turns out
any ideas

a henna tip: I cover my forehead, ears, neck etc with vasaline before
I henna to prevent funny orange drip stains, it works fairly
well.
