When hair grows itdoesn't cast off cells in the same way your skin does, instead the dead cells remain part of the hair strand and the hair becomes longer. Because hair doesn't cast off cells the part that is coloured stays. Henna molecules are smaller than conventional chemical hairdye molecules, so they go into the hairshaft very easily and stay in there. Once hair has been hennaed the colour is in there for good. some dye will come out in the first 2-3 washes, but for the most part henna is very permanent (even difficult to remove with hair bleaching). the best way to continue to have vibrant henna hair is to continue to henna it, The more times you henna the richer and more gorgeous the colour. I have heard it said that oiling your hair will actualy help remove the dye, possibly if the oil used containes terpenes whis the dye will readily disolve in (ie. clove oil ) hope this helps
