Start testing!Posted by Elettaria on May 20, 2004 at 21:34:28: In reply to: bought the henna..........question posted by Ms.T on May 20, 2004 at 20:37:45: It varies, and the only way to find out is to do hairbrush and thenstrand tests. 2 months should be long enough to start testing, certainly. The important thing is that your henna is pure henna, as opposed to having nasty chemicals added. The main culprit for reactions with chemically treated hair is not actually the henna, it's the metallic salts that are frequently added. Or so everyone here says. Look at the ingredients, and go for the best quality henna you can manage, which needs to be body art quality. What colour are you going for? You can either do a fairly plain henna (henna, water, lemon juice and essential oil for terping) or you can get fancy by adding other plant products. There are two ways of getting fancy: buy ready-made boxes of stuff that have already mixed up henna with indigo or whatever, or mix it up yourself. The general consensus here seems to be that it's better to mix it up yourself. I'm about to henna a couple of friends, for instance, and we'll be adding cloves to get a richer red.
