'black' henna failure

Hi - I bought some Nazeer henna labelled 'black henna' - its a
lovely hay-smeling green and does not drain off black or anything so
I figure it is an indigo/henna mix or something, not nasty
chemically stuff. The instructions said to mix it with boiling water
and apply it hot immediately then leave it on (wrapped) for 2 hours -
all of which I did. And it did....absolutely nothing! I have
noticed that applying henna (or indigo) isn't usually as simple as
just mixing it with hot water and whacking it on, so does anyone
have a suggestion as to what I could try to make it stick? I have
half-black (dyed with permanent dye) and half natural medium brown
hair, so going the option of real henna at this stage would be kind
of ugly.
I still have half a bag of this 'black henna' left and don't want to
give up on it just yet!!
