I have been on a CO routine for a few months now, which means that I never wash my hair, well, not conventionally with shampoo, anyway. Because I have curly hair, which is naturally very dry, I find that I really want to wet it every day. The idea is that I am dosing it with water for moisture and then trapping that in with conditioners which I also leave in until the next "wash". About once a week I "wash" my scalp and hair with conditioner, but everyday in the shower, I wet my hair and rinse it thoroughly before applying another dose of conditioner, which I only rinse out about 50%. This whole regime is outlined in Lorraine Massey's book "curly girl". I know other people do CO who don't have curly hair, and I don't know if there is any major variation to their routine. But thats mine, and I am finding it works really well. I know a lot of curly girls get second day hair, but mine really needs its daily dose of water. I have used vinegar rinses but its smelly! Especially where I am not going to be masking that odour with shampoo. I use lemon juice instead, it smells nicer and does a really nice job of clarifying if I get a bit of conditioner build up. However, I have seen that a vinegar rinse it very good for sealing the hair cuticle after henna and I will try it the next time I henna. I don't know if thats any help to you?... My answer to your question would be, that I think the longer you can go between shampoos, the better for the health of your scalp and hair. (The detergents in most shampoos are terribly harsh -- but you would already know that Tara; have you ever made your own shampoos?) But you can clean your hair quite well with conditioner, and some people go for a few weeks on CO and then shampoo for a week and then go back. Its worth experimenting...
