I can remember a scene where Lucy thought the house was on fire and
she was running around in her night dress in a panic, and then she
opened her closet and there were two jugs marked "henna" on the top
shelf that she grabbed and chucked out the window before climbing out
after them.

Robinhood didn't use henna, but I remember a tale where he use walnut
to dye his beard and hair brown so he could enter an archery
competition without being recognized.

Anne of Green gables ended up dying her hair green somehow when she
wanted black... could it have been stale indigo?
