How to use cloves?

The first time I used cloves in henna, I put about 15 g of cloves in
some water, tried to simmer it, and ended up with burnt cloves. Would
it work if I mixed the cloves with the henna and lemon juice and kept
them warm in a pot of hot water off the stove? Would it work if I added
them to the henna jelly recipe?
