black streaks with indigo

Hi -- a few weeks ago I posted about doing a few black streaks in my
hair with indigo. I forgot to follow up. The black streaks did not
work; they turned out barely darker brown. I was wondering if people
here could help me troubleshoot, so when I try again I might have more
success.

I used Catherine's indigo, one of the sample bags, and I followed the
directions exactly. Potential problems:

1) The indigo was a few months old -- I had bought it last November,
then lost track of it, and only found it again right before I used it
2-3 weeks ago. Though it was sealed in the plastic bag, and stored
out of the light, could it have gone off? I did get dye release, and
it stained newspaper, paper towels, and a piece of fabric that I
tested it on. But maybe it didn't have enough strength for hair?

2) My hair was hennaed, but it had been about a week between henna and
indigo. Do you have to do the indigo right after the henna to get
good results?

3) I left it on the strands about 45 minutes, wrapped in saran. Maybe
I should have just left it longer?

4) I might have had some conditioner left on my hair from the last
time I washed it. Could that be the problem?

Any suggestions or help gratefully received. :)
