Indigo alone

I am new to this. I have medium brown hair. I read elsehwere on
here that for indigo you do first henna then indigo. Can indigo be
used alone. I don't want any red. I actually wouldn't mind an
extra blue/grey/charcoal ashiness. Is the henna required in order
to avoid discoloration or will the indigo not hold without the hair
being heannaed first. Thanks a lot.
