Lemon juice with henna makes a light red color in my experience, not
cherry. I use henna every two months from Sudan and it works
perfectly. I don't even have to add any ingredients, but for
healthier hair, I add one egg, and olive oil. I avoid lemon juice coz
that will make a light red, and my hair is very dark so I don't know
if it will show up or make it look crazy. LOL

It could be the brand you're using. Experiment with some others!

: Prior to hennaing I did some fun little strand test experiments. I
: thought you hennaheads might be interested in my results.
:
: I did 3 tests using varying degrees of lemon juice:
: one with 100% lemon juice
: 2 with 50/50 lemon juice and chammomile tea
: I added paprika to one 50/50 sample and tumeric to the other.
: There was very little color variation in the samples with any lemon
: juice in them at all. After a few days of oxidation there were
: subtle differences visible only under natural light and if I held
: the samples against my skin to view the color. But they were more
: or less the same.
:
: I did one sample with cheap merlot only, no lemon juice.
: It showed less dye release on the paper and stained more in the
: auburn brown range rather than red.
:
: But the strange test was the one I did with chammomile only, no
: lemon juice. It showed the least dye release of all the samples -
: very little, but still some. But the color it produced was a very
: odd cherry color. It looks a little more unnatural than the other
: samples - more like what you might get out of a chemical dye.
: Almost in the pink range.
:
: All samples were left overnight for dye release (maybe 12 hours),
: and the hair was left in the henna to stain for 6 hours.
:
: It should be noted that I was using a henna-indigo-senna mix from
: Light Mountain. I bought it before I found this site and I don't
: plan to use it again - my finished dye job is a little uneven.
: Also, I last dyed my hair with a chemical dye about a year ago.
: Although I didn't see any direct adverse reaction to the dye, that
: may be a factor in my results.
:
: So if anyone is going for cherry, this may be worth experimenting
: with on your own hair.
