I've done some searching, and not found out anything more about this
substance, but it may be that it is a metallic salt. Still, it is only
listed as being present in the red mixes, not in the unmixed red or in
the chestnut mix, so it should be safe enough.

Hmm ... a year probably isn't enough, if I have to buy 4 kilos. I
don't expect I'd use more than 300-400 g at a time, and I doubt I'd
henna 10 times in a year.
