I know you've all tried red wine, grape juice, and a bunch of other
stuff, but my husband made a comment last night that made me think
that we'd found the answer! :-)

He remarked that my pomegranate juice "stains everything, even the
ice cubes..." and you know, he's right. It might be a bit pricey
(about $5 US for a bottle) but you wouldn't be using that much of it
anyway, right? I figure pomegranate seeds & juice can stain my
fingers and clothes, so why not hair? It's just about the color I
think some of you are looking for, so maybe it'll work?

Anyway, just thought I share FWIW. I prefer my henna'ed hair a
little more on the orangey-red side, so I'll leave the experimenting
with this to others. Good luck!
