: Hannah, I have done it several different ways since that posting
: that you referred to. I have mixed indigo into the henna in
: different proportions, henna without indigo, henna with indigo and
: walnut powder, etc. Because the underneath portion of my hair ( the
: section that lies close to my neck...words leave me here!) has more
: pigment in it naturally anyway, it picks up more color from all of
: the powders anyway! But the top layer of hair ( the part you see
: when my hair is not clipped up) is all of the same color; not
: different colors along the hair shaft (if that makes any sense??).
: I think that the indigo mixed into the henna powder does give a
: darker color (I forget original question of poster above...old brain
: here)...the more you mix in the darker color you would probably
: get. But the last time I hennaed ( I have hennaed about 5 times
: total, I guess?) I hennaed with plain henna, then a day or two later
: I did just plain indigo. This made it considerably darker than
: before ( just a dark auburn color) but the base "tone" is still the
: same...it is just alot darker than my original pictures that I
: posted on here, I think. It did NOT turn my hair black by any means,
: maybe gray hair doesn't hold onto the indigo as well. But I haven't
: taken anymore pictures outside and posted on the web to tell the
: difference yet. My husband likes it lighter so I guess I won't do
: that anymore (giggle) but I like it darker myself. Hey, my hair is
: about 70% or more gray and I did it! But you can see the difference
: in my hair in comparison to the people with less gray on the mixes
: section. It will, did, get darker the more times you henna but I
: think that the indigo powder washes out somewhat. I wash my hair
: nearly every day though, as I garden and sweat allot. Other peoples
: hair my be different. So far, I am happy with it and will keep
: hennaeing until I see a good reason not to! Like, all my hair falls
: out or something. LOL

Hi Pam--Thanks for your input. I know what you mean about the "underneath" hairs in
back--I've had the same experience. I don't mind the variegation so much but it's the
warm coppery color I'd like to adjust--I just read some new posts about that. Also I've
ordered some cassia and indigo from Catherine and have decided to wait until that comes
before hennaing again. I wondered what effective proportions would be--my tentative
plan is to mix equal parts henna and cassia and a little bit of indigo. I don't want it to be
too dark because my coloring doesn't support strong color any better than warm color--
qauestion is how to get the right touch with the grey. I think I got reallygood stainfor
onmy grey. Now to adjust the color to what suits me. My problem is that while I don't
have much grey at all in back, but in front and on the sides it's easily 50-65 percent
grey--(can't really estimate because it looked different depending how I combed it). And
it's what people see when they talk to me.

Another problem I had with the grey--I had done Rainbow henna in Persian light brown
and let it go 8 weeks before re-hennaing. the roots are a distinctly different shade from
the rest of my hair--which scares me a little incase the grey is increasing and whitening
even as I write this. Those new roots are quite orangey. I think the turmeric was a wrong
choice for me because in addition to adding highlights, it aded to the warm quality in the
henna. That's why I'm hoping the indigo may cool it down. any advice you suggest about
amount of indigo to cool without darkening too much will be appreciated--we old grey
heads must put our wits together.
