: Debbie,
: reading thru all the posts in your thread, it is looking as if you
: may have a sensitivity to the indigo; however, if I read correctly,
: you didn't use indigo in your first mix and you still experienced
: some scalp irritation, am I right?

No, not with the henna I got from the health food store, but I only
had it on for about 45 minutes. I didn't know anything about henna or
had found this site until after I used it.
:
: I have continued to increase the amount of cloves I use in my mix and
: with my last henna I definitely noticed it while it was on my head.
: The saving grace for me is that I only leave mine on for 90 min.-
: 2hrs. I'm sure it was the cloves that caused me trouble, and it was
: only a minor burning type sensation, almost like the minty feeling
: you get in your mouth with toothpaste?! It was fine after I rinsed it
: out.
:
: Lemon juice if it is your main liquid could also cause some stinging.
: The scalp is just skin, and can be very sensitive; Also it sounds
: like you leave your henna on for quite a long time, so its worth
: considering that anything you put in your mix is going to be in
: contact with the skin for a prolonged period. Even something
: relatively benign can cause irritation if in contact for that long.
:
: In terms of the itching lasting a week, its also worth making sure
: that you rinse VERY VERY well after hennaing. I find that henna does
: a great job of exfoliating my scalp which can tend towards flaky, so
: I think its safe to assume that it has that sort of action on the
: skin; if any little bits or residue is left behind, its likely to
: cause an itchy irritated scalp. You may have to spend a LONG time in
: the shower rinsing thoroughly, or do what I do, immerse yourself in
: the bath for 5 min to get out the bulk of the henna muck and then
: follow up with a shower. Last bu not least you might want to use
: something soothing on your scalp ( a gentle conditioner) after you
: rinse and for the first few washes after.
:
: Hope this helps...

Thanks for the great advice, and your right about the rinsing well
afterwards I thinking I didn't do the best job of that and there is
where I think contributed to this. Just wondering about indigo, since
I had the redness and itching during the first test on my arm.
