I'm wrapped up in a plastic shower cap right now. I have very thick, fairly long
hair that takes a lot of hair products - really sucks it up. I've been doing my
own henna singlehandedly for about two years. I start with very clean, very
dry hair and divide it into eight sections with plastic (never metal!) clips. I
unwind one section at a time, paint it with a haircolor brush with plenty at the
roots, and rewind it and then move on to the next section. It takes about an
hour. I use pretty hot henna - I put it in a glass bowl and microwave it
periodically to keep it warm. When I'm done with the roots, I let it all down and
pack the remaining henna mix all over the ends and really squish it in - I lean
forward in a stall shower to do this. Then I put on a disposable plastic shower
cap and keep it on as long as I can, being sure to wipe my neck, ears and
hairline really well. I keep mine on two to six hours usually - I've slept in it,
and it wasn't worth the trouble.

I've had good luck at Sally Beauty Supply. They sell dozen bags of plastic
clips, haircolor brushes, latex gloves, and packets of shower caps, too, very
cheap. And when I'm done, I can put the glass bowl, the clips, and the brush
into the dishwasher! Oooh - time to rinse . . .
