How does Peroxide work and what are its' dangers?

Hi all
I recently heard that a chemical called Peroxide can lighten the
hair, and I'm concerned about the potential dangers and side effects
it can have--both for the hair itself and the scalp.

If you know about how Peroxide actually lightens hair, please let me
know.
