: I just hennaed my hair. My hair was previously color-treated
(L'Oreal
: permanent hair dye in copper red, the peroxide developer, etc. a few
: times). I'd been getting progressively drier hair (what a shock)
and
: my scalp was getting irritated - the dandruff flakes were getting
: bigger, too. I did a test with the henna I got from Castle Imports
on
: harvested hair and everything was fine. I have hard tap water - I'm
: about to move out of this house and can't really do much about
that.
: I had no problems with the henna, but it was extremely difficult to
: get it completely out (probably because my hair was dry, and the
hard
: water and such). I used conditoner several times, soaked my scalp &
: hair with coconut oil, rinsed it for 30-45 minutes each time, etc.
: I'm still having residual ruboff on my pillow but nothing too bad.
I
: like the color I got just fine, but I'll need another one in a few
: weeks for sure, to deepen the color. Sorry I have no camera or I
: would provide pictures.
:
: I've read plenty of success stories (especially interesting are the
: ones who have used henna for years). But then again, I've been
: reading posts on forums on other websites where people claim it can
: wreck your hair, they had horrible experiences, etc. I'm sure some
of
: this is the result of impure henna powders and beauticians trying to
: scare you away (so you'll buy more hair dye that will burn your
: scalp). I was wondering if anyone had bad experiences with
perfectly
: good henna on non-processed hair? I'm not talking about allergic
skin
: reactions, I'm talking about it damaging your hair (excluding other
: possibilities, such as hard water). I don't know why this would
: happen, but I'm curious.

I would give a lot to know where these henna horror stories originate
from. I can understand the possibility of someone who has been
disappointed with the colour they got (especially if they used poor
henna) and of course there are the tales of horrific results from
disastrous combinations of metallic compound hennas and processed
hair. But I know they're out there, although almost always of the "my
hairdresser told me" "my sister's friend told me" " my sister's
friend's hairdresser says" variety.

It has a very very long history of safe use with beautiful results
for a lot of women. Unfortunately the cosmetic industry being what it
is (a multibillion dollar self-regulating hugely powerful Madison
Avenue invention)lots of women will always be duped into spending a
whole lot of money on products that cost less than the jars they come
in and believing the bizarre claims that go with them.

To the people who say bad things about henna I say "liar liar, pants
on fire!"

They should give us a break, and give us a bit of credit we're not
that stupid are we? The best answer is the proof of your beautiful
hennaed hair.
