I agree, definitely stay away from the chemical hair : dyes. I've only used them a total of four times in my life (three of : those times it was to dye more red too - go figure) and every time : they damaged my hair something fierce. : : I looked up "henna hair" on the search engines and found some very : old links to archived messages from a long hair forum I frequented : (and still do). In that archived message I was trying to get to the : bottom of the "neutral henna" mystery. At the time I could find : nothing but mixed messages regarding what it actually was. I *knew* : that it did not condition in the same way that henna did, but for the : life of me I couldn't find any conclusive answers. It's nice now to : know that there really isn't a such thing as "neutral henna" and that : it is in fact a whole whack of different plants. Makes sense since : different kinds had such variable effects on my hair. : : I can't wait to hear about your results (Hopefully you will take some : pics too!) and I will be sure to share mine as well. I'm a little : nervous about having a fairly drastic color change since I have never : had one before, but I also know that reds work very well with my : coloring, so that is comforting. : : I saw that you wrote about growing your hair longer on another post. : If you are interested in long hair care information and chat, the : link below is a nice site to visit. : : Palonia : : : : : I've recently de-lurked, so I thought it would be appropriate if : I : : : wrote a little intro. I've only very recently become interested : in : : : body grade henna for the hair. If it weren't for Catherine's : site : : I : : : would have gone on thinking that all henna was the same when it : : came : : : to it's use on the hair. In the past I have used the "neutral" : : : and "strawberry blonde" from both Rainbow and Light Mountain (I : : never : : : found much of a difference between these two products). The only : : : time I found any noticeable conditioning was when I mixed : : : some "strawberry blonde" in with the "neutral" and even then, it : : : never lasted more than a week. I'm currently waiting for my : first : : : order of body grade henna and look forward to joining the ranks : of : : : the henna heads. : : : : : : Thanks to Catherine for creating such an informative site! I've : : : hungrily read through all of the forum archives and can't wait to : : : experiment myself. : : : : : : Palonia : : : : Hi, Palonia, : : : : Like you, I would have thought that all hennas were alike, save for : : this site, and - also like you - I have simply been devouring the : : information here. I had breast cancer five years ago, alone of all : my : : female relations, and this despite being a vegetarian, nonsmoker, : : and one who takes a 'wee nip'only very occasionally.I get dreadful : : migraines, facial oedema, and erupt in hives for no hitherto : : discernible reason, and even my doctor found it quite mysterious. : : Well, hello, PPDs! Since finding this site, I have followed link : : after link, doing my own research along the way, and didn't I find : an : : article in which I learned of a 1986 study which connected breast : : cancer and PPDs - a study whose results were never widely : : disseminated, and which was never followed by others. Truly, had it : : not been for this site, I might well have carried on using chemical : : hair dyes and putting myself at further risk. As it is, I am : awaiting : : my first package of henna from Catherine, since I'd be an idiot not : : to make the change, and I say three cheers for this site! Hi,again, I did have waist length hair, which I had been dyeing black, but its natural red tones kept breaking through, so I decided to work with them. Unfortunately, as tried to strip the black dye and go redder, the ends started to hang like dead rats' tails, so I lopped it off - then played with it, getting shorter and shorter, all this just since last November. It is very thick, has a loose natural wave, and grows about 1" a month, so the good aspect of all this is that I'm starting with less chemical residue than might have been the case. Over the weekend I did try to henna with what must have been very stale powder [plus it was three days older than God]and got no color results at all. At least, unless I am wrong about 'dead' henna, as a diagnostic run it showed that I have not got a great deal of dye buildup, nor did I turn green. I can't wait to try the body quality henna, and as soon as I do, yes, indeed, I'll post some pictures! Thanks for your interest!
