Question to Catherine-SemiPermanent dye and henna

Have been researching henna and am really interested in trying it.
Have been dying my hair for a couple of years now so I'm aware I need
to wait several months for it to grow out first. I am certain I will
HATE the two-tone head I'll be stuck with while I'm waiting to use
henna. Is it safe to use the semi-permanent wash out dyes to tone
down the multicolor look while I'm waiting for the permanent hair dye
chemicals to fade out, or will this just reset the waiting clock?
Hopefully, my question doesn't read as bass-askwards as it sounds!
