: So far I have seen strong coffee suggested as a mix-in to get brown.
: Any other suggestions? Does anyone have experience with sage tea?
no. I have tried rosemary (over henna), which is also supposed to dye brown. it is said
that rosemary (without henna) has to be applied daily for a couple of weeks and then
you only have to use it once a month. I've been to lazy to try that - just did it a couple
of times, and then it washed out in a couple of days.

as for coffee, I think that doesn't stay. it's a great help in getting through the initial
bright-redness of henna, which gets browner a couple of days after hennaing on its
own anyway.

: The ammonia trick works by reducing the henna with an alkali (ammonia
: is basic). While this is an unacceptable chemical to apply to the hair
: (which hasn't stopped the commercial hairdye folks) - there is another
: readily available alkali that should work - the 6 or 9 percent
: hydrogen peroxide solution sold as "developer".
interesting. I didn't know that peroxide was an alkali.

: Hydrogen peroxide should do the same chemical trick on the henna as
: the ammonia. Perhaps more gently, which would give a warmer brown
: instead of near-black.
:
: Has anyone tried this? I am harvesting gray hair from my comb to try
: this. I plan on henna-ing, then applying the peroxide. I'll probably
: finish with an acid rinse to close the keratin scales on the hair.
:
: I'll let you all know how it comes out. If you've tried this before,
: TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED.
I've only tried a store-bought bleach on it, which as peroxide in it and a lot of other
things. that turned bright orange. but that is not what you're planning to do.

hm, interesting. I may try it myself. I'm growing out my henna anyway, so while I'm
looking ridicilous anyway I may as well do science a favor ;-)
