Done it both ways. My hair took a lot more orange-copper-bright red
tones (which is what I crave, with my mousy hair that goes bleh
auburn) when it was scquaky clean: shampoo twice, no conditioner,
accept the inevitable tangles, brush, let dry, then henna. When it's
got 1-2 day's worth of oil from my scalp in it, it tends to take more
brown tones. I don't use any hair products like mousse or gel or
anything, just a mint (or sometimes a green tea) shampoo and tea tree
oil conditioner. I think it's the conditioner residue with the small
bits of tea tree oil in it that make my hair go browner with the less
clean hair.
