Re: A Question about 'Organics'Posted by Katherine on September 5, 2004 at 22:47:25: In reply to: Re: A Question about 'Organics' posted by Meg on September 5, 2004 at 10:20:32: : Organic means grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.: Vegetables and fruit that are organic are healithier for you in that : they don't have the pesticides on them or in some cases in them for : you to ingest. If something is a poison to animals or insects it is : a probable poison to you. Also organically grown produce is richer : in vitamins and minerals because organic farmers do fertilize, but : they use manure, composted tea, slag (mineral by products from steel : manufacturing), lime mined from a rock quarrey and so forth. : Natural means are used for insect control such as preditor insects, : soap water, and planting other plants that repel insects next to the : plants you wish to protect. Examples being mint next to squash. : Squash bugs hate mint. Marigolds next to tomatoes. Nymitodes hate : marigolds. On and on it goes. Organic farmers have a whole list of : things they use. This can be found at Garden Web's website. : : Now as to are organic vegetables/fruit any better in quality and : where is the research? Well, I don't know any direct studies, but : you can read alot of health books that explain this or Dr. Mercola's : website, which is the best information I have found on the subject : of health and thanks to what I've learned from Dr. Mercola, I am : recovering my own health. I personally believe that organic is : better because of how it has worked for me. Now for cosmetics I'm : more concerned in natural verses synthetic. I use natural products : for my hair that I mostly make myself and I keep this simple. I use : an herbal tea I make with various herbs, apple cider vinegar and : water. However, I use Suave shampoo now instead of the more : expensive brands because the expensive brands don't work anymore : since I henna. In fact the only kind that does work is Suave. This : is not unusual as I learned about this on the Long Hair Community : Forum. Oh and I know that Suave is not all natural, but in the : world we live in you simply have to do the best you can with what : you've got to work with. I have lived in a rural community most of : my life if not directly on the farm. So from a practical sense I : have a connection with the soil and growing, living things. I know : I perfer the taste of home grown over commercially produced : anything. If you have ever tasted fresh raw milk you could never : drink what passes for milk in the store again, least I can't. Well, : I've rambled too much on this and I guess I'll close with this. My : education is in the field of engineering not biology, but I : understand that I feel better the closer I get to living the way God : intended. We are part of the earth. We came from it and will return : to it, so I think we need to take care of it. : : Meg Thank you for what I [and others, too, I should think] found a lovely post, something like the writings of Annie Dillard, and not at all rambling.
