Re: Question from a beginnerPosted by iris on September 8, 2004 at 19:51:33: In reply to: Question from a beginner posted by Whitney on September 8, 2004 at 19:06:57: : Okay I have read though all the posts but something has not been: answerd. Why is it that you have to wait 12 hours for the dye to : release from body art quality henna and with the stuff the is : natural from the store you don't have to wait at all you just mix : with hot water and apply. Also why the difference it times you have : to leave it on your head with fresh 6+ hours. Store brand only 1 : hour. these are just differences in instructions, they are not tied to any difference between store-bought and body art quality themselves. you could also pour boiling water on body-art quality henna and leave it on your hair for only an hour, and get pretty much the same results you would with a store-bought henna you used that way. it's just better to not add boiling water to henna because you may cook the henna that way and this could mean that it doesn't dye as well (how this works exactly, I don't know - I imagine cooking the lawsone just destroys it, maybe oxidizes it?). if you mix henna with cold water, you'll have to wait longer for dye release than if you add warm water - things are always slower when they're cold. : That is a big difference in time for someone like me who works : 2 jobs and goes to school.I feel that my spare time is so precious : that to sit around for 6 hours with stuff on my head is almost : sacreligous. you can also sleep in it, or study? but again, you don't HAVE to keep it on for six hours, you just get more colour if you do. this is the same for store-bought or body art quality. people who do body art with henna try to get as much of a stain as they possibly can (no fun in orange patterns on your skin), so they know exactly how to get as much dye from henna as possible. don't cook it, wait for dye release, keep it on for a long time. you can benefit from their knowledge to get maximal colour in hair as well, but you don't *have* to. up to you. iris
