Confused about henna & hair color...

Hello all. I have been using henna for body art for about three
years now, but only recently have I been thinking about using it for
my hair. I have had several frustrating results with hair
dye/highlights both at home and in the salon and am looking to a
safer, more natural alternative. Over the last two years I have had
semi-permanent color, red hair dye, and three batches of different
types of highlights: blonde, "redlights" and red/blonde (my hair is
naturally medium brown).

Anyway I am a bit confused about the combination of henna and hair
dye. I seem to be reading about two conflicting views. I realize
that I would need to do a test in any situation but typically would
I need to grow my dyed hair out completely or after a few months
should it be alright to dye? I guess what I'm trying to say is can
only "virgin" hair be dyed with henna or can a few month old colored
hair be dyed after a test is performed?
