I bought a cheap nylon salon cape at the beauty supply store. It
works wonderfully to keep the drips off clothing. I can’t imagine
not having something like that to keep clean.

By the way you should definitely try mixing the henna paste in a
plastic Ziploc bag. Just pour all the ingredients into the bag, seal
the top, and then knead all the ingredients together. No need to
wash bowls or spoons.
