The clove is the unopened flower bud of a tree called Syzygium aromaticum or Eugenia caryophyllata in the myrtle family. I get it at the local health food store. Clove powder smells VERY strongly of something which smells a bit like a dentist's office (but two-week old clove in hair smells a lot better than a dentist's office, and the gal who first noticed it on a rainy day used to work for a dentist). Clove essential oil is largely eugenol, the preliminary anesthetic dentists use. The name for clove in most Romance languages is derived from caryophylla: girofle, garofalo.
