You know, I'll be needing it before thenPosted by Elettaria on October 10, 2004 at 09:18:34: In reply to: Re: Can't remember posted by Catherine Cartwright-Jones on October 10, 2004 at 01:20:31: The dissertation is due in Jan. I think they're fine with my citingURLs, though, so it's not the end of the world if it's not polished yet; I'll tell you which bits I plan to quote and you can check them over, if all else fails. I may or may not end up citing you, but I'll probably need something on orientalism and the fear of menstruation and how that's reflected in "Dracula". Dissertation is a bit of a sore point right now, anyway. I've spent the summer barking up the wrong tree, owing to a member of staff handing me a reading list on Gothic and not saying much else. So I spent the summer reading about whether or not the ghosts are real in "The Turn of the Screw", repressed homoeroticism in "Dracula", and connections between vampirism and eating disorders, and wondering where my ideas about voice got to. (I hate Freudian crit, and anyway it's hardly news that "Dracula" is about repressed sexuality.) On the last day that we're allowed to consult staff, I found someone fantastic in the MUSIC DEPARTMENT who saw at a glance what I was trying to do and sent me in the right direction, namely Bakhtin and Barthes. So I'm finally back to issues of voice and embodiment and so forth. Menstruation might fit in somewhere to do with female expression of the body, the way in which the body speaks itself? Dunno.
