Did a spectrum of sample tests...Posted by Corinna on October 13, 2004 at 21:22:30: I am one of the chickens. I have never dyed my hair but have reallybeen considering it for some time. Been researching the various ways. Bought Light Mountain products but still kept researching and came across this website. Dumped the Light Mountain products in the trash. Decided to follow the advice on this site. I saved some hairbrush samples. Ordered Indian henna since I read that it dyes more towards brown than red. First three sample tests: henna/apple cider vinegar henna/lime juice henna/lemon juice Glad I did. The henna/lemon juice combination was very brassy. Decided I needed to do more testing, so believe it or not, I had my sister cut off a few inches of my hair. I wanted to have more brown, as well as, a bit more of a spectrum of highlights. So the next three sample tests: just added double strength coffee to the first three preparations. Out of those six, I liked the henna/apple cider vinegar and the henna/lime juice/double strength coffee combinations. So for the next sample I combined the two I liked. The henna/apple cider vinegar+henna/lime juice/double strength coffee is a winner. It is a deep auburn brown with red, as well as, golden highlights. The highlights show in the indoor lighting, as well as, the outdoor sunshine. This color also goes very well with my skin tone. Even though I adore the above combination, I didn't stop. Still had henna and still had hair samples. I also did the following: henna/apple cider vinegar/hibiscus tea - henna/lime juice/double strength coffee/hibiscus tea - henna/lemon juice /hibiscus tea - henna/apple cider vinegar/ground cloves - henna/lime juice/double strength coffee/ground cloves - henna/apple cider vinegar/ground nutmeg - henna/lime juice/double strength coffee/ground nutmeg - henna/lime juice/apple cider vinegar/hibiscus tea/double strength coffee/ground cloves I did not like any of the above. For some reason they do not have any highlights in indoor lighting. But it was fun and I now know which one is for me. Just have to order some more henna so I can actually dye the hair on my head. Of note: I found that my hairbrush sample was a bit different than the cut samples. I tend to loose my gray hairs to the hair brush so they are in a higher ratio in those samples. I am glad I used my cut samples since it gave a better representation of the finished product.
