Color seems to fade quickly

My hair has naturally grows from the roots a darkish-brown and
stays dark for about 1.5 inches. (Way underneath the hair is also a
darkish-brown.) Then it becomes quite high-lighted with golden-
reddish tones where the sun hits it.
I've hennaed twice, first on Sept. 11, then on Oct. 9. And now
(just 9 days after the second time), my darker roots seem to be
noticeable again. Am I doing something wrong, or do I just need to
henna more frequently in these beginning stages and hope that my hair
will begin to respond better? (I'm going from a medium brown to a
dark brown to see if that'll help with the root and undergrowth
areas.) THANKS SO MUCH!!!
