I use cold lemon juice, but put the mix in hot water (from the hot water tap, not
boiling). It takes 1-2 hours to get dye release. I check it after an hour or so by
stirring the mix; if I see two colors (they are a bit difficult for me to tell apart, but
they are distinct), it's ready.
