No clue why. Your results might not be accurate, try a two step test with a fresh henna. I, following Kim's lead, went from natural med brown with bleached highlights to straight henna (too orange), to 50/50, and repeated 50/50 at the next henna. My hair was getting darker each time because of the build up of the indigo in particular (highlights have disappeared) I then followed with 50/30 and then 50/15 to try and keep it from going too black/dark. I think it is forever going to be a balancing act to keep matching my mix over my roots to the ends and not go too dark. The indigo may fade a bit between applications but not enough to compensate for a 50/50 mix. If your goal is to get close to pure black, it seems an easier task. It is more difficult trying to keep it lighter. Get the times right on the indigo. I'd love to see a chart like the henna chart with dye release and demise for indigo. My experience using Catherine's indigo, is dye release is about 20 minutes and demise is at about 90 minutes- all with room temperature tap water. My guess with the mixed henna/indigo is the indigo does its thing in the beginning (1st 45 on hair)and probably demises quickly mixed with the acidic henna and the remaining head time is mostly henna action. It could be possible that the indigo dye stains the henna molecule before it penetrates the shaft, but I know little about the science and doesn't seem that way in Catherine's grey folical diagrams. Hope this helps.
