preventing color buildup

I've been using henna successfully for about three years to cover my
gray (I was a strawberry blonde).

My problem is this: My hair grows very fast, so I have to reapply
henna to my roots frequently (every 2-3 weeks). But I've found it
difficult to apply henna to my roots without also getting henna on
the rest of my hair. As a result, my roots are the right color
(strawberry blonde) but some of my hair, especially near the front,
has turned a deep red color from buildup.

Is there something I could do to cover these strands to prevent color
buildup?

On another note, the heat cap I bought from Rainbow Products died
after less than a year (I've otherwise been very pleased with the
company's profucts). Does anyone have a brand to recommend?

Thanks!
Monique
