Well, you know, I just can't say. In my experience, no. I get plenty
of dye uptake in my hair in spite of the fact that I never use
shampoo on my hair ( I do "CO" which means conditioner only routine,
and I always leave a certain amount of conditioner in the hair), use
oils on my hair regularly, and do occasionally include jojoba or
coconut (this is a product called "fractionated" coconut oil, so it
is liquid) in my henna mix.
But then, I have very porous hair, and my natural colour is a light
golden red head, so I haven't got far to go to get to DEEP RED, lol.

I'd say the jury is still out on the oil inhibiting henna thing? In
theory, if oil is coating the hair shaft and sealing the cuticles it
might impede the transfer of the dye molecules -- then again, henna
actually bonds with the keratin and doesn't rely on opening the
cuticles like chemical dyes do...

It never seems to cause me any problems.
