I'm guessing you're looking at those amazing pictures of someone's
daughters at everydaymehendi.com?

I've tried for the longest time to replicate that colour, and in
the end I was forced to conclude that it wasn't gonna happen... i.e.
in the right lighting conditions yes, my hair can look like that
(with just henna), but in most lightings it doesn't.

I've tried a beet-derived food colouring to get the effect, as well
as the beet juice and beet pulp, and it was all extremely messy and
just didn't have an effect on anything except briefly on my scalp,
and on every other bit of skin that was exposed to it.

my best purplish results have been with just henna and a tiny bit of
indigo. in sunlight I still get orangey red though - unless I use a
LOT of indigo, but then it looks ashy brown in artificial lighting.
