I did more dictionary searches:

'a crystalline acid C4H4O4 found in various plants or made
synthetically and used especially in making resins'

'An organic acid, C4H4O4, found in various plants and produced
synthetically and used mainly in resins, paints, varnishes, and inks.'

'organic compound related to maleic acid'

as for maleic acid:

'a colorless crystalline compound found in unripe fruit (such as
apples or tomatoes or cherries) and used mainly to make polyester
resins'

'A colorless crystalline acid, HO2CCH:CHCO2H, used in textile
processing and as an oil and fat preservative.'

It's possible it has two uses: aesthetics (tinting/colouring the
henna powder) and preservation. Can't find anything on how safe it
is tho'!
