Wow, someone recognised my name!Posted by Elettaria on December 9, 2004 at 09:00:19: In reply to: Re: Thinking about cloves.... posted by Pierre on December 8, 2004 at 21:58:18: Admittedly I picked it because I wanted an aromatherapy/botanical namein general, and it's a pretty word; I don't have any particular passion for cardamon. But yes, it's elettaria cardamomum. I've tried terping with tea tree and cardamon oils, and it's a lovely blend and goes well with henna (although to be honest the henna overwhelms it eventually). The tea tree cancels out the excessive sweetness of the cardamon, and the cardamon cancels out the medicinal fragrance of the tea tree. An essential oil blend I've used in my herbal-vinegar rinses is cardamon, ylang ylang and lemon. Simmering cardamon pods would probably have a nice effect, too. I used ground cloves in the mix at a ratio of 1:6 for my ex-girlfriend, who kept the henna on for a good five hours. Towards the end it irritated her scalp, and we reckon it was probably the cloves. So bear that in mind, especially if you're leaving the henna on for a long time or have sensitive skin. Certainly in the field of aromatherapy, clove oil is quite a strong skin irritant.
