Sometimes ammonium laurel/laureth sulfate is used and is considered milder, but not by much. These cleansers are a bit harsh for hair and skin. Additionally, there has been quite some talk for quite some time about the hair- thinning effects of these sulfates, along with a few studies (here and in Europe) that appear to support this.
