To shampoo or not to shampoo?

I have just done my second round of henna+indigo colouring for the
month. Love the way it feels and the way it colours my hair (I
brought the henna from Catherine).
I would appreciate if someone could guide me about the washing part.
When I did the rinsing,I kept at it till the water ran clear. Then,I
realized I had no more conditioner left so I took a small amount
of 'shampoo + conditioner' type shampoo and washed. I saw the water
was no longer clear but an indigo blue.
What would be the best way to do the first wash? Just rinsing off
with water followed by conditoner?
