Re: Two more questionsPosted by Elettaria on March 6, 2004 at 00:39:57: In reply to: Re: Two more questions posted by Catherine Cartwright-Jones on March 5, 2004 at 13:57:09: I rang K briefly earlier and as expected, the symptoms on the pageabout PPD reactions exactly matched L's. K is feeling rather nervous since she dyed her hair dark brown a few days ago and it says that almost all dark brown and black hair dyes contain PPD (possibly I shouldn't have told her this when she was on her way out to a party!), and I suspect we might have another convert to vegetable dyes for the simple reason that she was the one who took L to hospital and saw exactly what the reaction was like. I've sent her on the second link, thank you so much. I've also e-mailed Daniel Field to find out what they put in their dyes, since I think those two might be interested in using them (L's not going for red, and K can't switch to henna just yet). After the first time I always got someone else to henna me, and I still don't know how I managed it the first time. The only one who was any good at it was my ex-partner. (Very ex.) Problem was, it was still terribly heavy and uncomfortable, and washing it off was more than I could handle - and I didn't have ME so badly in those days, the fatigue and muscular problems are a lot worse these days. So whatever I use for conditioning my hair, it's got to be easier even if I get a friend to help. If and when I talk K into hennaing, however, I'll probably be the one helping her. The reason I was asking Fia about her mixes was because the deep conditioning one is rather vague, she doesn't give times or how to adjust quantities for different hair lengths, so I thought it was worth asking for more details since I don't want to overdo it and spend another five years with parti-coloured hair when I've almost got rid of the henna from four years ago. Let me know how the senna goes, I'm most intrigued. Assuming that senna is applied in a similar fashion to henna (maybe with decocted chamomile if you want to go for blonder?), will Fia's cunning methods with pectin or conditioner be applicable? Is it a as much of a schlep getting hold of decent senna as it is getting hold of decent henna? I've noticed from their website that Napiers (local herbalist) sell what they are calling red, black, brown and blonde henna, with mention of neutral henna as well. They're a good enough company that these will be plant products of some sort, even if they obviously can't all be henna; I'm going there for an aromatherapy treatment later today, I'll ask. They probably stock powdered senna as well, knowing them; I believe they're very good herbalists, first herbal house in Scotland and all that, and high quality products, if often a bit overpriced.
